“Mehndi” that is commonly known as henna, is a paste associated with positive spirits and good luck and therefore in Asian culture it is considered as Shagun (sign of good luck).
The wedding traditions in India calls for Mehndi ceremony to be held 1-2 days before the wedding date as a way of wishing the bride good health and prosperity as she makes her journey on to marriage. There is also a belief that it’s a significance of the love and affection between the couple and their families.
Mehndi that is applied during Indian weddings is not just a plain paste of mehndi powder and water. It’s a blend of Eucalyptus oil, a bit of lavender oil and a few drops of lemon. These oils not only help in darkening the color of mehndi on the body, but also enhance the benefits of mehndi and make the paste highly medicinal.
The core significance of applying Mehndi is to utilize its natural medicinal herbal remedies, cooling the body and relieving the Bride of any stress before her big day. Henna is applied to both the hands and the feet as a means of cooling the nerve-endings of the body, preventing the nerves from tensing up.
Apart from this there are many more benefits of henna listed on my page:

In the intricate design of the bride's mehndi, the groom’s name or his initials are also hidden. Some bride’s nowadays, chose to sport it quite visible in the front. Some rituals also have it that during the post-wedding ceremonies, the groom has to find his initials in the bride's mehndi-adorned hands. This is a fun ice-breaking game for the couple, which also helps them to establish some intimacy.
Bride Riva was very fond of peacock, Peacocks symbolize grace, pride, and beauty. They are a sign of joy for all who see them. Peacocks are often used in Indian mythology and folk stories. I tried my best to incorporate her wish for her special day J
The best part is that the smell, the beautiful rich color and the health benefits that mehndi lends act as a powerful aphrodisiac. Also, since the color and smell remain for days, it boosts the romance in the initial days of wedding.
